The truth of the cause of suffering

Buddhists maintain that there is no external creator and that even though a buddha is the highest being, even a buddha does not have the power to create new life. So now, what is the cause of suffering?( i think this is debatable but we have no answer to the question of creation..the chicken or the egg who came first.... what i think we all exist .. just in different forms all the time)

Generally, the ultimate cause is the mind; the mind that is influenced by negative thoughts such as anger, attachment, jealousy and so forth is the main cause of birth and all such other problems. However, there is no possibility of ending the mind, of interrupting the stream of consciousness itself. Furthermore, there is nothing intrinsically wrong with the deepest level of mind; it is simply influenced by the negative thoughts. Thus, the question is whether or not we can fight and control anger, attachment and the other disturbing negative minds. If we can eradicate these, we shall be left with a pure mind that is free from the causes of suffering.

This brings us to the disturbing negative minds, the delusions, which are mental factors(when we have headache.. sometimes we hear the phone ringing even though it hasn't... while driving i feel that their is going to an accident but nothing happens.. just a negative thought). There are many different ways of presenting the discussion of the mind, but, in general, the mind itself is something that is mere clarity and awareness. When we speak of disturbing attitudes such as anger and attachment, we have to see how they are able to affect and pollute the mind; what, in fact, is their nature? This, then, is the discussion of the cause of suffering.

If we ask how attachment and anger arise, the answer is that they are undoubtedly assisted by our grasping at things to be true and inherently real. When, for instance, we are angry with something, we feel that the object is out there, solid, true and unimputed, and that we ourselves are likewise something solid and findable. Before we get angry, the object appears ordinary, but when our mind is influenced by anger, the object looks ugly, completely repulsive, nauseating; something we want to get rid of immediately—it appears really to exist in that way: solid, independent and very unattractive. This appearance of “truly ugly” fuels our anger. Yet when we see the same object the next day, when our anger has subsided, it seems more beautiful than it did the day before; it’s the same object but it doesn’t seem as bad. This shows how anger and attachment are influenced by our grasping at things as being true and unimputed.

Thus, the texts on Middle Way [Madhyamaka] philosophy state that the root of all the disturbing negative minds is grasping at true existence; that this assists them and brings them about; that the closed-minded ignorance that grasps at things as being inherently, truly real is the basic source of all our suffering. Based on this grasping at true existence we develop all kinds of disturbing negative minds and create a great deal of negative karma.

In his Entering the Middle Way [Madhyamakavatara], the great Indian pandit Chandrakirti says that first there’s attachment to the self, which is then followed by grasping at things and becoming attached to them as “mine.” At first there is a very solid, independent I that is very big—bigger than anything else; this is the basis. From this gradually comes “this is mine; this is mine; this is mine.” Then “we, we, we.” Then, because of our taking this side, come “others, our enemies.” Towards I and mine, attachment arises. Towards him, her and them, we feel distance and anger; then jealousy and all such competitive feelings arise. Thus ultimately, the problem is this feeling of “I”—not the mere I but the I with which we become obsessed. This gives rise to anger and irritation, along with harsh words and all the physical expressions of aversion and hatred.

All these negative actions (of body, speech and mind) accumulate bad karma. Killing, cheating and all similar negative actions also result from bad motivation. The first stage is solely mental, the disturbing negative minds; in the second stage these negative minds express themselves in actions, karma. Immediately, the atmosphere is disturbed. With anger, for example, the atmosphere becomes tense, people feel uneasy. If somebody gets furious, gentle people try to avoid that person. Later on, the person who got angry also feels embarrassed and ashamed for having said all sorts of absurd things, whatever came into his or her mind. When you get angry, there’s no room for logic or reason; you become literally mad. Later, when your mind has returned to normal, you feel ashamed. There’s nothing good about anger and attachment; nothing good can result from them. They may be difficult to control, but everybody can realize that there is nothing good about them. This, then, is the second noble truth. Now the question arises whether or not these kinds of negative mind can be eliminated.

Hi there...
thought provoking post...
mind is the cause of all suffering and in the mind also lies the end of all suffering.
let me ask you a question - in the absence of darkness there is????
LIGHT...
in the absence of ignorance there is????
KNOWLEDGE...
well i am being a little ambitious by stating taht in the absence of ignorance there is knowledge, but we can assume it i guess, hmmnnn?

the more you fight something the more difficult it becomes to defeat it... and this is particulary true in cases of matters related to the mind...it needs immense strength to be able to fight the mind...the mind can be a great friend and an even greater foe...
if a naturally short tempered person tries to 'fight' anger, it will automatically aggregate somewhere else deep inside him and once the aggregation swells it has to explode or implode right...? hence the best method would be to regulate the intensity of angry reactions and then gradually remove it completely...

@preeti..
actually.. they both always exist good and bad ,light and ignorance..
..
if we assume one is .. one isn't we actually are acknowledging it somewhere..

not fight .. accept it.. then understand it... then only decide what to do with it..
it's something i understand...

can i ask you something?
where did you get this write-up from...?
and what have you felt while you explored Buddhism....?
does it intrigue you that they believe in nothingness...?
does their chanting take you to another universe...?
does tantric buddhism boggle your mind...?
:-)

sorry...was being slightly tongue in cheek...
i lived in this tibetan monastery for a few days with a friend. apart from myself there was just this british lady...the settlement was a few kms away and in the monastery there were only the monks and the lamas...
one morning we woke up at 5:00 and went to the 'Golden Temple' ...there were these idols of Gautama Buddha, Padmasambhava and (i think) Avilokiteshwara...60 feet high looking down at you with serene faces...and hundreds of monks...scarlet-robed, chanting in a hypnotic rhythm. even the most fickle-minded person would have gone into a trance.
then the amazing thing happened...the sun rose and suddenly the idols that were in shadow were bathed in the golden sunlight...the first rays of dawn...pure, untouched, soft radiance...it happened as though in slow motion. i could see the rays move to cover all the three idols completely..while the rest of us were still in darkness. and (call me insane) but i felt that the smiles on their faces broadened because of that light.
it was one of the most humbling experiences.

@preeti..

i was reading online.. about the nature the cause of suffering.. i think this is dalai lama's ..
what i have felt when i explored buddhism...
many things.. nature of ur fears..
the anger that comes due to them..and the action comes from them..
that peace lies within,so does other things..
you decide what to feel and what to not.. if u keep asking why... someday u realise the truth or something.. closeby..

about the chants .. yes they take us to a high energy state cause our thoughts get cleared.. if u know about chakras .. they activate our chakras .. so we feel a high..
actually give a better high than alchol and drugs.. so be careful if u chant..its addictive..
always remember why.. before doing the chants..
about tantric buddhismm.. its just a state... we reach by practicing ..

may be they were smiling at you.. u just noticed them later..

jokes apart..
these places monasteries ..temples.. masjids.. gr8 people live there..they who have renounced many things....and much more in control of their senses than us.. so we feel gr8 when we go to such places..

Preeti said...

oh...i didnt know that chants activated our chakras. hmmnnn...
well you know (maybe you are not interested but i'll say it anyway)...buddhism came to me by accident...when i was in 6th grade i dreamt about that story where that bird gets injured and Gautama buddha (then siddhartha) saves it...(uncannily i seem to remember all my dreams and also when i dreamt them)...
maybe that had some kind of an impact on me...because i have been flitting in and out of buddhism...i dont know anything about the eight fold path ...have not read anything... but i am a believer in the fact that everything is nothing...
i will then go ahead and contradict myself by saying that i do believe in afterlife...and i do believe that every 'everything' has a little 'something'...hmmnnnn

:-)))))

just curious... but you dont seem like a happy guy...

sorry...none of my business

@preeti

buddhist or not..
the idea is to experience everything for yourself and then say right or wrong( that too a personal right nd wrong)...
essence of actions.. is more important than the action themselves..
........

@ preeti..

my happiness is different...

@preeti...

anything u feel good ... its just due your chkras getting a kick..
from food.. to alcohol... to sex .. feeling good is temporary phase of intiating your chakras..

Preeti said...

hmmnnnn....
as long as you are happy it is allright if it is different...
:-)

well as far as chakras go...hmmnn...i am a reiki healer so during the initiation i got all the chakra blocks removed but that was like eight years back...
i do believe that our entire bodily systems are linked to he chakras...

you know there was a time when i was very much enamoured by buddhism. but all i felt while i was exploring it was a tremendous sense of peace and i must say that it taught me detachment...
that is one thing that i have achieved from it. hmmnnn...

so what else do you like...????

Achilles's Heel said...

somehow...i feel the matras are more powerful.. reiki takes a lot more..
like u have use the symbols.. and visualize ...
prayer helps.. belief... that something will happen.. pure believe helps..
i believe in the frequency of sound..
that sound .. what we speak lasts for ever..therefore we should speak the truth always..cause sometimes nature itself speaks with us ..and sometimes we with nature..

Preeti said...

"sometimes nature itself speaks with us ..and sometimes we with nature..."
BEAUTIFUL...and absolutely SACH...
well mantras do have their own strengths but you know something Varun, they also need memorizing...
but with symbols it is more like a drawing or a work of art which is basically more easier to remember..
im not debating but...yeah...if you are an imaginative person then visualizing is pretty simple you know...
for instance the green healing energy and the golden cosmic energy, the white light, all these were very easy for me to visualize...
as far as prayers go...well i know hanumaan chalisa and im trying to figure out vishna sahastra naam...
:-))) for instance i know what each doha in the chaalisa means and i visualize them you know...so i end up remembering them...it is like a story...
i think for every venture one needs to have belief...thats the most basic necessity...belief or faith or shraddha or nishtha...whatever you call it...
and you also need patience (Sai Baba's dictum - Shraddha and Saburi)...patience to be able to wait for the ultimate truth, to be able to wait without expecting any returns...
hmmmnnn.......
you know... i love silence... it has a tremendous strength because it makes you aware of your intrinsic nature and also the external nature...
its nice interacting with you man...

Preeti said...

you havent yet replied to my comments in deathly hallows

well i was saying matras are more powerful.. cause they work better for me.. they give more peace..
symbols just activate the chakras.. so do the visualization..they help in healing the concious body.. as far as i feel...i might be ignorant..
matras hit the subconcious and the superconcious..
i actually believe the lack of belief is the biggest problem.. around here..
